Built in the 1960s on a series of man-made canals, this 750+ home community offers something unique at Lake Tahoe: the ability to dock your boat in your backyard and motor directly to the open lake through the Tahoe Keys channel.
The community is managed by the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA), which maintains common areas including swimming pools, tennis courts, a private beach, and the marina infrastructure. Annual HOA assessments fund these amenities and the ongoing aquatic weed management program. The Keys is a self-contained community with a distinct identity within South Lake Tahoe.
Tahoe Keys offers three distinct property categories. The condominium complexes along Venice Drive and surrounding streets provide the most affordable entry, with units ranging from studios to three bedrooms. Canal homes — single-family residences on the interior waterways — represent the core of the community, each with a private dock on a quiet canal. The most prestigious and expensive properties sit on the main lake channel with panoramic lake and mountain views and direct open-water access.
The Tahoe Keys marina is the largest private marina on the south shore. Residents can launch boats from the community ramp, moor at their private dock, or rent slips in the marina. The channel to the open lake provides easy access to the entire south shore, Emerald Bay, and beyond. Kayaks, paddleboards, and small watercraft are popular on the calm canal waters.
Tahoe Keys sits on the southwest end of South Lake Tahoe, near the intersection of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Venice Drive. The Y commercial area is minutes away, Heavenly Mountain Resort is a 10-minute drive, and the Stateline casino corridor is about 15 minutes east. Baldwin Beach and Kiva Beach are nearby along Highway 89.

Tahoe Keys vacation rentals can generate strong revenue due to the unique marina and boating amenities, but viability varies by sub-area. Some sections of the TKPOA have HOA restrictions on short-term rentals, and the City of SLT VHR permit is required. The 900-permit cap in residential areas (April 2026 amendment) may limit future availability. Canal homes with boat docks command premium summer rates. Condos have lower barriers if the specific HOA allows STR.
